DO YOUR PRACTICE MEMBERS RESPECT YOU, DOCTOR?
Many Chiropractors have huge hearts, great hands, practice members that love them, but there’s still something missing in their practices. Referrals, payment, commitment to their adjustment schedule; these all seem to be inconsistent, and sometimes even non-existent. Your practice members nod in agreement with almost everything you say. Do they get it or are they just “yessing” you to death? Sure they love you; however, they don’t respect you, your office or Chiropractic. How did this lack of respect manifest itself, you ask? You made the mistake of not setting boundaries in the doctor-practice member relationship. Just like the teacher everyone loves because they can get away with anything.
In all relationships there needs to be boundaries. If there are no boundaries, there will be a tendency towards complacency and an inevitable lack of respect. Respect is always earned and rarely given. Look at a parent-child relationship. If the parent creates boundaries for the child, they will grow up with an attitude of respect toward themselves as well as others. Your practice members have no problem with giving you respect as long as you create an environment of respect in your office. If you allow the inmates to run the asylum, you are in trouble.
Some of the ways your practice members show you their lack of respect: decreased referrals, not attending a New Patient Orientation, lack of compliance with recommendations and payment policy. Or how about this one: incessant questions about fees. How long is it going to take? I can’t come in any longer because of my insurance coverage has dried up? These symptoms point to one thing… there is a lack of respect for the doctor. The end result will be resentment on the doctor’s part toward people and Chiropractic.
Many reading this will not be able to agree with this concept. Here is a scenario that will help you see the vital link between a practice member’s respect and trust for their doctor. Say you are in your dentist’s chair with a painful tooth. He says you need a root canal. If you have respect and trust for your dentist, you say when can you do it? You may not even ask the price. If you do not have a great relationship with your dentist, you will ask how many visits, how much, how much pain, can the tooth be saved, does insurance cover this? You get the point. Does he have your best interest in mind or does he have his own self-interest in mind? If you don’t have respect from your people, you will spend much time answering the same rhetorical questions over and over.
There are two main reasons that fuel a lack of respect in a Chiropractor’s office. The first: most people have very low expectations of Chiropractic. Number two: most people have been let down by doctors in the past. Think of the emergency room stories. There is a bad taste in their mouths. They have been taken care of by people who may not always have their best interest in mind. When they finally get to our offices, they are skeptical and very non-committal. And what do we do? We skip our patient education procedures with these practice members. Just like a parent giving in to the temper tantrums of their children. What the practice member and the child need is the same… a loving but firm boundary about acceptable behavior.
Chronic missed appointments and tardiness are also signs of a lack of respect. The more recalls you do the more appointments they miss. Why is it that some people commit to care and make all of their adjustments? RESPECT. Every practice member in your office is the same. They are all human beings. Have compassion, understanding and boundaries for all. Have the dignity and respect for them to offer your help in restoring or expressing their health. Some of your best practice members were very difficult when they started. There was a point in your relationship when you had to put your foot down with compassion.
A wise man once told us that there are a lot of people that need help. You will only get a chance to help people who want your help, not need your help. Many people will enter your office and say they will do whatever it takes to regain their health. Let their actions speak, not their words. Do they commit to your patient education procedures, or do they tell you stories of why they can’t commit. A relationship with no boundaries of respect is no relationship at all. When the symptoms get better or the insurance dries up, you have to replace yet another practice member. There is a better way! RESPECT yourself and your practice members.

Be, Do, and Get
Taking action to grow your practice can be a scary and frustrating decision.
A million questions (Where do I start? Which way is best? Is this a good idea?) and excuses (My spouse won’t want me working so much and they’ll criticize my ideas) will start to pop up. Sure, go ahead and listen to them all if you don’t want to do anything about your practice problems. Yes, make not knowing which way to go your “Why I Can’t Succeed” story. You’re in a mess, maybe you’re making decent money, but you know you’re in a mess and should be finding a way out.
It’s not your fault, but it is your responsibility to get out of your mess!
There you are with a great spouse, kids, a house, and yet you are frustrated, angry and feel like quitting. You are in the paralyzing grips of not performing up to your expectations. The debt is mounting and your practice is stagnant; or worse yet…in a slow steady decline.
You get some new patients from the web, some marketing, some ads and…
You only get a temporary increase in your stats, followed by the predictable bottoming out the following month. Your overhead is rising and your net profits are shrinking. You keep getting pulled into additional ways of producing income from weight loss to teeth whitening. You didn’t go to school to help people lose weight. You went to save lives and help people with Chiropractic- including children. This miracle profession has turned into merely a job. What have you got yourself into?
Without an upgrade of your communication skills, practice will continue to be difficult
Demanding patients, less and less third party reimbursement, paperwork, staffing issues, CA drama, and patients just not getting it are just some of the problems of faulty communication skills. It’s not how you practice Chiropractic…it’s your delivery of Chiropractic. You are not currently communicating in a language that your people speak. This does not get better with time. Some things to remember:
- You are not their friend You were not trained in Chiropractic school to be a leader. Unfortunately, you’re taught to give people what they want and everything will be okay. “You’ll be my friend.” With this as your mantra, people will walk all over you. Ever try to have friends as patients? Your drinking buddies will not see you as a leader, nor will they take you seriously. You get the idea.
- You can’t ride the horse until you have a relationship with it Try to ride a horse without a relationship and you will get the behavior you deserve…kicking, biting and bucking. Trying to give people what they (symptomatic relief with no patient education) want without a relationship, including boundaries, is just as futile. When you ask for commitment from people without a relationship, they will kick, bite or buck you. Commitment is money, bringing kids in, and following your recommendations.
- Spouses don’t mean to…but they put pressure on you Most spouses see Chiropractic as just a job…nothing more and nothing less. “Why can’t you shut up about Chiropractic,” they ask? “It’s none of your business what parents do to their children.” Problem is: we care. It’s not just a job…it’s a vision that burns deep inside of us. When our spouses don’t understand this, it puts more pressure on us, our relationships and our office. And if your office is not performing the way it should…it makes it look like our spouse may be right. This is exactly the time when many accept low levels of achievement and lower their expectations. This dynamic is one of the most overlooked and fundamental in our profession. Continue to do nothing and it could cost you your marriage, hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost income and a lost dream.
- If you are earning an allowance instead of a Chiropractors income…it’s your choice People in our coaching program average almost 30% increases annually across the board. Some significantly higher than that average. New practitioners, established DC’s, associates, independent contractors…it doesn’t matter where you are or where you’ve been. Telling the truth about Chiropractic
Holy cow…we cannot even begin to recap on how fantastic last weekend’s seminar was. Inspiring? Yes. Motivating? Yes. But most importantly, it was pure truth. Every word spoken was pure truth about Chiropractic and changing the world. No fluff, no softening the blows…just pure truth about Chiropractic.
We received an email the other day from a TNR DC who had been invited by a former colleague to stop ‘fooling around with Chiropractic’ so she could finally make a living. The TNR DC was not only appalled because she is very successful as a subluxation-based Chiropractor, but also saddened that her former DC friend, turned ‘laser beam therapist’ – was caught in a lie.
I’m sure you know many DC’s who have that preconceived notion that ‘there’s no money in Chiropractic’. You maybe trapped into this belief yourself because times have been tough. We’re here to tell you that – IT’S A LIE!!! It’s a big fat MYTH that you can’t be successful TELLING THE TRUTH about CHIROPRACTIC. The top 5 reasons DC’s fail in practice…and in life!
We’ve been sending out a series of emails to DC’s all across the country (Not on it?? Go here and enter your info at the bottom!) about the top reasons DC’s fail. In our years of experience, not only as coaches, but also as DC’s, we know this top 5 inside and out. However, we also know how to overcome each of them and how to succeed.
We’ve noticed more people have been opening these emails than any other subject matter we’ve ever sent out in the past. Thus, proving that people would rather move away from pain, rather than toward pleasure. Nobody seems to care when we tell them “Double your practice!” or “Improve your life!” They want to see the 5 reasons DC’s fail…to make sure they’re not doing any of them…which they probably are.
The crazy thing is: they’ll read the email, realize they’re doing at least 1 of the 5 (if not all of them), but still not do anything about it. Help is literally right in front of them, just a simple phone call away, but they refuse to ask for it.
Where did we learn this mantra that you have to be self-sufficient and asking for help is a sign of weakness? Growing up you had teachers and coaches who helped you along, but the second you’re an adult it’s uncool and supposedly a waste of your time.
And that, my friends, is a huge reason many people fail to reach their potential.
That mindset is a killer, and we’ve all fallen victim to it at some point in our lives and careers. Just ask for help. No matter what it is. If you don’t trust anyone, it’s a reflection of your trust level with yourself. Are you constantly afraid you’ll let yourself down? Let your family down?
