You cannot correct what you cannot see.

From a very early age, you sure didn’t like taking anybody’s advice. You like to do things your way…even if it doesn’t produce results! The truth is, most of us are like that. From practices to marriages and parenting, we always decide things for ourselves. The result? Your practice may not be reflecting your true talents and abilities. Not by a long shot. Your CA may not know how to fix the problem, but she has made suggestions. Your spouse also doesn’t know how to fix the problems or how to teach you. These are people in your life that care about you and want to help you, but they're not in a position to accurately help you.

We go through rigorous training and expenditure to become a DC. It only makes sense that a certain amount of pride goes along with it. Once we get a notion to do something, we keep doing it and are not available to accept input or advice from others. In other words, we don’t ask for help!

The main characteristic that separates DCs is coachability. It’s the ability to accept and implement new concepts and ways of doing things without necessarily understanding it at the beginning. There is a natural resistance that occurs when we are doing something that feels unnatural or outside of our comfort zone. This resistance is valued by the average DC (the herd mentality), and it actually cripples those who are extraordinary.

With helping a lot of DCs over a lot of years, I have learned time and time again that it’s the willingness that is the key ingredient, not the understanding. Understanding only comes later once you look back at your new results. Why are we so unwilling to accept input from others? Why are we so unable to TRUST?

If you lack trust in a relationship, you will be unable to grow. This is true with relationships with our parents, siblings, co-workers, teachers, and coaches. If you don’t trust each other you will have extreme difficulty growing and adapting to the changing waters of life. This includes your practice, as well.

Sooner or later, you are going to have to trust somebody. You will have to put your faith in them and believe that they will not let you down. You may or may not realize it, but it takes so much energy to think you know everything. It causes fatigue, frustration, and a feeling of being overwhelmed. If you could focus your time and energy on being the doctor and caring for patients you’d be a whole lot happier and more successful. Let someone help you reach your true potential.

To become world class in anything, it takes individualized, one-on-one coaching; it is not mass-produced and is definitely not for average DCs. Don’t kid yourself. If you truly want to become the best version of yourself, stop wasting your time with box store coaching, BSOs, and online shortcuts. Understand that you need to continually train at a very high level under the watchful eye of someone who sees greatness in you; someone who will hold you accountable and make it fun.
